As as art a student, you would imagine that my focus was on the museums. I tried to fit the most museums I could into my tight schedule because I love them and also are very important for any art, design and history lover. So let talk about them.
Madrid, has a dedicated avenue to their most important museums, all located within a few minutes from each other, known as The triangle of arts that includes:
- Museo del Prado, art lovers will be delighted to see an incredible amount of pieces by Velazquez, Goya, Rubens, Raphael just to name a few. And of course my favorites “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Bosch and “David with the head of Goliath” by Caravaggio.
- Museo Reina Sofia, this museum contains pieces by the most important Spanish artist like, Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. Its essential to go and see in person “El guernica” from Picasso, which is a massive and impressive piece.
- Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, this museum houses the best and most prestigious private collection of the family of Heinrich and Hans Heinrich Thyssen- Bornemisza. Which in includes pieces by Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Dalí, Monet among may others.
In Lisboa
- The museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT), one of my favorites! This museum brings together visual arts, urban affairs, technology, and science… I mean…everything I could’ve asked for. This one is a MUST.
- Calauste Gulbenkian Museum, in this museum features a private colection, that includes works by Ruben, Degas, and Rembrandt, along with sculptures, paintings, among many more incredible art pieces.
- National Azulejo Museum, the azulejos have played an incredibly important a role in Portugal’s cultural history. Just by walking around the streets of Lisbon and you’ll see it’s relevance in the city. This museum highlights their history.

Each city managed to enamored me beyond what I was expecting. And left me with the desire to go back again and explore all of the museums and culture excursions I didn’t had the time to see.
I recommened both cities, but with at least five nights in each one.
